Benefits of Water

The intake of water has beneficial physiological effects.

The European Food Safety Authority published a scientific opinion recognising :

  • Water contributes to the maintenance of normal physical and cognitive function
  • Water contributes to the maintenance of normal thermoregulation.

This means that water can influence our physical performance, as well as our mental performance. If we don't consume enough water for example, we may experience fatigue, or become less alert). Water also contributes to the regulation of the body's temperature.

To prevention dehydration or diminished bodily and cognitive functions, at least 2.0 L of water should be consumed per day. This goal can be obtained by drinking water, beverages of all kinds, and also from eating different foods. These specific recommendations only apply to conditions of moderate (room) temperature and normal physical activity levels. The recommended amount of water can be easily consumed as part of a balanced diet.
